Understanding Registration

How to Register

All registrations are completed through our PowerUp Sports system. If you are new to Blizzard, please create a parent account and player profile for each athlete. If you have registered previously, simply log in using your existing account.

Register here: calgaryblizzard.powerupsports.com

Locations

Our primary outdoor training location is Heidelberg Park (formerly Inland Park).

Additional training and technical sessions take place across Northwest Calgary, including:
Rockyridge, Panorama, Varsity, Dalhousie, Edgemont, Valley Ridge, and Springbank.

For our Blizzard in the Community (U4–U9) program, sessions are also offered in neighbourhood locations such as Kincora, Nolan Hill, Valley Ridge, and Sage Hill–making it easy for young players to get started close to home.

You can learn more about our outdoor facilities here.

Practice Times & Schedules

League games are scheduled by the Calgary Minor Soccer Association (CMSA) and take place at fields across the city. Training schedules and final field allocations are shared once the CMSA league schedule is released each spring – we appreciate your patience as we coordinate this process!

Training times vary by age group and program:

  • Weekdays: 4:30 PM – 10:00 PM

  • Weekends: 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Older age groups will utilize early morning training times where appropriate.

Payment

Registration fees are due at the time of registration.

  • Technical fees are adjusted based on your child’s final team placement (tier)

  • Payment plans are available during registration

  • Financial support is available through KidSport and Jumpstart

If you have questions about payment options, please contact:

Volunteering

Calgary Blizzard SC is built on the support of our community. Parent volunteers play a key role in helping us deliver a positive, high-quality experience for all players.

A $100 volunteer deposit is collected at registration. Once your family completes a minimum of 5 approved volunteer hours, this amount is credited back to your player’s PowerUp account.

Volunteer opportunities are posted throughout the season via our SignUp system and include a variety of roles to fit different schedules and interests.

In addition, each team relies on volunteers to support day-to-day operations. If you’re interested, please connect with your team’s coach at the start of the season. Common team roles include:

  • Assistant Coach

  • Team Manager

  • Tournament Coordinator

  • Fundraising Coordinator

  • Team Treasurer

No technical soccer experience is required – just a willingness to be involved!

Training Philosophy

The Orange Way

At Calgary Blizzard, our approach to player development is guided by #TheOrangeWay – our club’s in-house training philosophy. Built around the four key moments of the game – attacking, defending, and the transitions between them, The Orange Way helps players understand not just how to play, but why.

We focus on:

  • Attacking Organization – creating and building play

  • Defensive Organization – structure and discipline without the ball

  • Attacking Transition – quick, confident play when we win possession

  • Defensive Transition – immediate reaction when possession is lost

This framework gives players a clear, consistent understanding of the game at every stage of their development.

Our curriculum is reviewed and refined each year to reflect the evolving modern game – ensuring our players are always learning relevant, effective, and progressive football.

How We Develop Players

Our training environment is designed to build complete players. That means developing:

  • Technical ability (comfort and quality on the ball)

  • Tactical understanding (decision-making and game awareness)

  • Physical confidence (movement, coordination, and athleticism)

Above all, we want players to feel confident, creative, and capable every time they step on the field.

Technical Training vs. Skill Training

You’ll often hear us refer to both “Technical” sessions and “Skill” sessions. While they’re closely connected, each serves a different purpose in a player’s development.

Technical Sessions

Technical sessions focus on how we play as a team. Players learn:

  • Passing, receiving, and movement within our game model

  • Positioning and decision-making in realistic game situations

  • How to apply their skills under pressure

These sessions often include opposed, game-like scenarios to help players translate training into match performance.

Skill Sessions

Skill sessions focus on the individual relationship with the ball. Players work on:

  • Dribbling and close control

  • Running with the ball at speed

  • Quick changes of direction and creativity

  • Confidence using all surfaces of the foot

The goal is simple: more comfort, more confidence, and more creativity on the ball.

  • No – this field is optional.

  • Higher tiers include additional technical training sessions and carry a greater competitive commitment.

  • Players are automatically placed in their appropriate age group. You may request to play up during registration, and our technical committee will evaluate the request carefully.

Should you want this to be considered, please include that in the “player preference” section.

  • Online registration accepts credit card only. If you require alternate payment arrangements, please contact the registrar.

  • The facility fee supports the ongoing maintenance and sustainability of the Shouldice Indoor Facility, ensuring our athletes have access to high-quality training space.

  • We believe every child should have access to soccer.

Families requiring support should contact the registrar to discuss options – all players who require financial assistance must go through through KidSport and/or Jumpstart.

  • Email info@calgaryblizzard.com to discuss availability.

  • For grassroots and Tier IV and below, we do our best to accommodate friend requests.

For Tier I–III teams, placements are based on ability and development needs.

  • Only fully registered players (or those with payment arrangements) may be evaluated.
